For example, groups of faculty, staff and students travel every spring to Guatemala to serve the poor. Students also participate in volunteer work throughout the community, working at soup kitchens, retirement homes, hospitals, blood drives, and other charitable organizations. Students at CCSJ also regularly attend to the needs of the world’s poor and starving by joining such organizations as the Peace Corps. CCSJ’s student life also reflects their commitment to Catholic teachings. Bible study, religious services and a campus ministry are some of the offerings. There are also clubs and organizations designed to foster what’s learned in the classroom or to cultivate additional talents or interests. These include a creative writing club, a media and fine arts club and a club for criminal justice majors. It was among the first to develop and implement testing for many infectious diseases including, HIV, hepatitis B and C viruses, West Nile virus, and Chagas disease. The ARC operates the nationwide hemovigilance program to examine donor and patient adverse reactions.
