Pioneer Natural Resources is an independent oil and gas exploration and production company, established in 1997 through the merger of Parker & Parsley Petroleum Company and MESA Inc. The company is primarily engaged in the exploration and production of oil, natural gas liquids, and gas reserves. Historically rooted in Texas, Pioneer is a prominent player in the Spraberry/Wolfcamp oil field within the Permian Basin and the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas. Additionally, it ranks among the largest natural gas operators in southeastern Colorado's Raton Basin and in gas fields around Hugoton, Kansas, as well as in the western Texas Panhandle. Pioneer also conducts drilling operations in the liquids-rich Barnett Shale and in Alaska’s Oooguruk oil field, where it became the first independent operator to produce oil on the North Slope in 2008. The company announced a significant joint venture in June 2010, partnering with Reliance Industries to develop the Eagle Ford Shale.
